Mom of four dies after falling off a gym treadmill

Delrie Rosario, 36, never regained conscious after falling and hitting her head

A 36-year-old mother of four has died after falling off a treadmill and hitting her head during a workout at an L.A. Fitness gym in Washington.

Delrie Rosario was working out with her sister, Marissa Woods, when the incident occurred, according to a report from KIRO News.

Woods said Rosario tried to slow the machine down, before falling and hitting her head. Rosario never regained consciousness after collapsing and later died at a local hospital.

“Heartbreakingly she has left behind four beautiful children,” reads a GoFundMe campaign for the family. “She has been the main provider for these babies for a while now, working two jobs to make sure they have whatever they want and need.”

According to the campaign, Rosario was an organ donor and has now saved five lives through her death.

“I have been notified that because of her incredibly generous spirit, she is saving lives even after death,” notes the campaign, which was initiated by Roasrio’s co-workers. “She will continue on in others through her heart, lungs, kidneys and liver. She has truly earned her wings in heaven!”

Though death is rare, treadmill-related injuries are not. About 24,000 treadmill injuries that require emergency department treatment occur annually in the U.S.

In 2015, Dave Goldberg, the CEO of SurveyMonkey and husband of former Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, died after falling off a treadmill and hitting his head while on a family vacation in Mexico.

In Goldberg’s case, the fall led to a traumatic brain injury and hypovolemic shock, a condition in which severe blood or other fluid loss makes the heart unable to pump enough blood to the body.

Citing data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, CNN reports that there were 30 reported deaths associated with treadmills between 2003 and 2012, or about three per year.

Earlier this year, fitness company Peloton paid a US$19 million (about $25 million) civil penalty related to its Tread+ and Tread treadmills. The machines were linked to 13 injuries, including the death of a child.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Peloton “knowingly failed” to immediately report that its Tread+ treadmill contained a defect that created an unreasonable risk of serious injury to consumers.

Beginning in December 2018 the company began receiving reports of incidents associated with “pull under and entrapment” in the rear of the treadmills, according to the Commission.

To stay safe while exercising, consumer experts remind treadmill users to familiarize themselves with the machine, including knowing where the shut-off button is, and to make use of the safety key by attaching it to their clothing to ensure the treadmill stops in case of a fall.

L.A. Fitness has not issued a statement in response to the incident.
